GM headquarters wrapped up for GMC during ‘Monday Night Football’

Custom project developed by Penske-affiliated company

    By: Bill SheaCrain’s Detroit Business

DETROIT – (Sept 5, 2014) — The signature element of Detroit’s skyline — General Motors’ Renaissance Center headquarters — is adorned with a massive GMC advertising wrap for the Detroit Lions’ upcoming appearance on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast.

The graphic work, which includes the truck brand logo atop the network’s game logo, was done last week by i.M. Branded, which is co-owned in suburban Detroit by Roger Penske’s Penske Automotive Group.

GMC is the official truck of the National Football League, and the intent of doing the massive wrap is to get the brand in front of the “Monday Night Football” audience when ESPN does secondary shots of the city outside Ford Field during the game. The games averaged 13.6 million viewers last season.

i.M. Branded designs, manufactures and installs custom vinyl graphic wraps and images for buildings and vehicles. Since 2010, it has had a millwork unit that does a variety of internal build-outs of auto dealerships, including fixtures and desks.

The wrap is about 280 feet tall and 125 wide, and is a perforated vinyl window film applied to the exterior of glass that allows people inside the building to still see through the windows, said i.M. Branded President Jim Whitehead. The film is similar to looking through a screen door.

    50 hours of work
The RenCen wrap was designed and printed, over about 50 hours nonstop, on the firm’s 2,400-pound HP Latex 850 printer, a $250,000 machine that uses eco-friendly ink, he said.

This is the largest wrap to ever adorn the RenCen, Whitehead said, larger than a wrap on the central tower for the Super Bowl and baseball’s All-Star game.

It took five i.M. Branded staffers a week to install the wrap, which will be lit at night this weekend and during the game, and will remain up through September.

While Whitehead didn’t disclose a cost, he said large building wraps begin at $100,000 and can top out at “multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

i.M. Branded’s largest wrap was a 400-by-125 wallscape on the north face of Joe Louis Arena in 2001 for the relaunch of Dodge’s NASCAR participation, he said.

Whitehead founded the company in 1996, and Penske took an equity stake in 2009, he said. The firm employs 78, and since 2003 has had an automotive focus. It does work directly or indirectly for the Detroit 3 automakers and more than 3,000 dealerships nationwide, Whitehead said. The company’s revenue last year was $13 million.

    Expanding beyond autos
The company’s clientele is expanding to other sectors and targeting health care and retail.

(Auto is) the vehicle to allow us to build out the infrastructure to handle large-scale image programs outside the automotive industry. Our printers don’t care whether they print cars or kids. – Jim Whitehead, President, i.M. Branded.

i.M. Branded has done wrap and graphics work for Detroit’s four pro sports teams, area universities and the Detroit Zoo water tower in 1998. It also recently provided the city skyline graphics for new Detroit police cars and ambulances, he said.

The company intends to bid on graphic and millwork for the new Detroit Red Wings arena that is to open in 2017, Whitehead said.

The company’s first building wrap was the Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills. The RenCen wrap for the national broadcast between the Detroit Lions and New York Giants on Monday evening stemmed from the Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix image work i.M. Branded had done with GM, Whitehead said.

The firm did a smaller wrap on the RenCen that faced the island during the Memorial Day weekend auto races on the island, and later had talks with GMC during a dealer event at Cobo Center, he said.

The game aired at 7:10 p.m. Monday September 8th. The Lions defeated the New York Giants 35-14.

    Detroit Grand Prix

    By: Stephanie Smith

DETROIT – (June 1, 2013) — The Detroit Grand Prix returned to Belle Isle last year after a three-year hiatus and this year’s return is nothing short of record breaking. Home to the epicenter of auto industry revolution, Detroit’s a fitting stage for the IZOD IndyCar Series to unveil their new standard in racing. The industry’s first double header makes it’s world-wide debut with the highly-anticipated “Dual in Detroit” where not one, but two Series races will take place Saturday and Sunday. If one record breaker isn’t enough, get ready for a heart pounding, never-before-seen, standing start when the green flag launches the track on Saturday. These history-making races are putting the Motor City at center stage, so you can expect no less than years of planning and months of work around the clock to make it both functionally and visually flawless.

With the world watching closely this weekend, the Detroit Grand Prix Committee knew they needed a company with proven quality, reliability, and the capacity to help put on such a grand-scale event. With nearly 50 different corporate sponsors and more than two miles of track to cover, there was one company they knew could get the job done – Detroit-born Innovative Media.

Event signage is often only noted when lacking or of poor quality, but for anyone attending this year’s race it’ll be hard to miss the vibrant graphics and custom signage made for every visible event area. Miles of sponsor signage define the track from start to finish but the drivers aren’t the only ones with a custom-made view. From the grand two-story entryways to the brightly colored 10-foot maps, each piece was made to enhance the customer experience on and off the island. From entry to exit, every sign underwent careful planning to ensure convenient navigation, aesthetics, and durability.

Last year we had unusually high winds, 60 mph, but luckily everything was secured really well. Out of about 3,000 banners only a few needed repair. Over the past year we’ve been engineering new ways to secure and structure everything so the weather won’t be any problem this year. – Steve Croce, Production Manager at Innovative Media.

Innovative Media created all of the signage, on and off the track, for the 2007, 2008 and 2012 races. Last year, along with most of the large sponsors, signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

Bud Denker, Event Chairman for the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Committee said, “we’ve worked with Innovative Media in past races and when it came to contracting the next few years we didn’t hesitate to continue that relationship.”

Denker and other race organizers often look to Innovative Media for input on sponsorship placement on and off track. As a non-profit organization, the DBIGP committee needed a company they can trust to advise on cost-saving ideas and efficiencies, giving honest assessments to help stay within the non-profit’s slim budget.

Innovative Media played an integral role in the success of the event, Denker said, “the company is very reliable and provides the high quality service and product necessary to make the event a success and keep the sponsors happy. Their event expertise helped in collaborating on best strategies for crowd flow and signage placement, which proved to be very beneficial in the decision making process for the Detroit Grand Prix Committee. We look forward to our continued relationship in future races.”

Producing and installing nearly 500,000 square feet of signage in less than three months required an additional third-shift print and finishing team of 16, working around the clock at the shop in Madison Heights, Michigan. The 10-person installation team begins their long days on the island more than a month before the race and two weeks following for the breakdown.

I always tell my crew, do it right or do it twice. I’ve worked with Innovative for seven years now and I know if it’s not perfect, it won’t be acceptable. That’s why I love working for Innovative Media, we all have high standards and that gives us something to be proud of at the end of the day. – Jeff Sacks, On-Site Installation Manager.

Beautifully designed and expertly crafted signage lines the five mile path from the heart of the city to the ends of the track, setting the tone for quality and class every step of the way. Innovative Media is signed on as the exclusive print and signage installation company through 2014. The team looks forward to working with the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Committee for years to come, bringing the world, and the spirit of racing, back to the Motor City.

For perspective, that’s equal to about 14 percent of the entire population in the United States. The group’s current initiative is to renovate all of their Chevrolet dealerships nationwide and Plains Chevrolet in Amarillo, Texas, is the most recent facility to undergo the coast-to-coast transformation.

Branded could incorporate the auto group’s guidelines with the OEM image program to create a custom package complimenting and adapting to the needs of this particular dealership.

Teaming up with the branding experts at i.M. Branded, Plains Chevrolet brought their facility to life with more than 36 AMR’s, Artist Mural Replaceables, finely printed graphic images mounted into brushed aluminum frames creating precisely tailored edges. Each AMR was sized to fit perfectly in relation to wall space and furniture for each customer touch-point area. The images artistically mimic the area they’re designed for, creating a fluid consistency across the various images to surrounding decor. i.M. Branded Creates Truck of The Year Wrap

    By Stephanie Smith
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (December 10, 2012) – Motor Trend magazine’s highly anticipated 2013 Truck of the Year was announced last week and RAM 1500 didn’t hesitate to stake the claim in their signature larger-than-life way. Just one day following the announcement, the Chrysler world headquarters in Auburn Hills displayed the award with a 130-foot building graphic covering most of the 15-story building.

Innovative Media printed and installed the original Ram 1500 featured building wrap on October 5, 2012. Immediately following the Motor Trend announcement, 43% of the original wrap needed to be replaced to showcase the award. This update totaled 6,864 square feet of signage spanning more than 4 stories of the 13-story graphic.

Turnaround time for the new signage was astonishing. In just 72 hours the building wrap went from the Innovative Media headquarters in Madison Heights, Michigan, to installation completion on the sunset side of the Chrysler world headquarters building. The installation team is highly trained and experienced on this project – even the freezing chill of winter couldn’t keep them from suspending off the side of a 15-story building.

Hanging from the side of a building in below freezing temperatures is nothing new for us. When the building is hot it’s more challenging to get the vinyl to stick, so as long as the vinyl is good we don’t care what temperature it is outside. – Matt Sorg, Head of the Installation Team,

The team installed the original wrap in October which printed around the clock over 6 shifts, totaling 155 panels. Each panel measures 4 feet wide by 26 feet high. The overall size of the graphic is 112 feet wide by 130 feet high, or 14,560 square feet of signage applied vertically by hand.

The recent update to the top section of the wrap was 66 panels of the original 155. This required a print time of 24 hours over 3 shifts using the Vutek 3360 printer. The material used is a perforated vinyl that’s transparent when viewed from the inside of the building.

Innovative Media has been creating and installing the Chrysler building wrap since 2000 and the company looks forward being a part of this iconic landmark for years to come.

DETROIT, MI – The City of Detroit is winding up for the World Series weekend and Innovative Media is throwing the first pitch! Whether you’re watching on TV or in the stands it’ll be hard to miss the 85 foot banner of MVP pitcher Justin Verlander. The banner was designed and installed by Innovative Media, brought to you by Fathead- a Detroit company best known for their life size wall graphics of your favorite professional and college athletes.

Detroit is hosting games three, four and (hopefully) five for the 2012 Series. The banner is visible above left center field, to the right of the scoreboard. The much larger than life 32-foot tall Verlander is winding up for the pitch, accompanied by the slogan “Opportunity is Made in Detroit”. A fitting inspiration in the fight for the World Series title but also for Fathead’s parent company Quicken Loans, well known for their dedication to growing Detroit’s economy and bringing jobs to the city.

The 85 by 32 foot banner is mounted to the Detroit Athletic Club Parking Garage on Adams, Comerica Park’s southeast side between entry gates B and C. Made from our heavy duty mesh material, the banner is ready to take on the high winds expected this weekend. With a fast turnaround time of just 48 hours from design approval to install, the team at Innovative Media knows what it takes to get the job done.

Total dealership upgrade at Autoway Chevrolet includes the i.M. Branded treatment

CLEARWATER, FL – Autonation, the largest dealer group in the U.S., has over 30 Chevrolet stores in its collection and the newly-renovated Autoway Chevrolet in Clearwater, FL is the latest to receive the finishing touch that only comes with a custom graphics package from i.M. Branded. The Mercedes-Benz facilities owned by Autonation benefit from great collaborations between i.M. Branded and the dealer group corporate team creating great retail environments; now the same custom attention is being directed toward Chevrolet dealerships.

The package at Autoway consists of 25 Artist Mural Replaceable (AMR) framed images located strategically throughout the dealership for maximum impact in critical customer touch points. Chevrolet has an image program that mandates five small pieces but Autonation immediately saw the impact potential of larger graphic branding custom designed for the dealership after seeing the five small pieces overwhelmed by the large dealership. Store General Manager Michael Cronk was previously at one of Autonation’s Mercedes-Benz dealerships that received a custom graphics package so he was excited to see the same type of treatment at his new assignment at Autoway Chevrolet. The loyal Chevy customers of Clearwater will appreciate their decision to go above and beyond.
